Getting to Cappadocia
Cappadocia is served by two regional airports, both roughly an hour from the main towns of Göreme, Ürgüp, and Uçhisar: Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) and Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR). Flying is by far the fastest way to reach the region from Istanbul or from abroad, with domestic connections operating multiple times daily.

By Air
Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV)
The closer of the two airports to Göreme, Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport sits roughly 30-45 minutes from central Göreme and is served primarily by domestic flights from Istanbul, with seasonal international connections. It's the most convenient option if your flight schedule allows.
Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR)
Kayseri, a larger city about an hour from Göreme, has a busier airport with generally higher flight frequency and sometimes better fares, particularly from Istanbul and other major Turkish cities, as well as some international routes.
Finding Flights
Domestic flights from Istanbul to either airport take approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes and run several times daily on Turkey's main carriers. If you're comparing routes and fares, searching for cheap flights to Cappadocia is a good starting point to check current schedules and pricing for both Nevşehir and Kayseri before booking your onward transfer.
Airport Transfers
Both airports are connected to Göreme and the surrounding towns by:
- Shuttle buses (Havaş or similar services), timed around flight arrivals, dropping off in central Göreme.
- Private transfers, often pre-booked through your hotel or a tour operator, offering direct door-to-door service.
- Taxis, available at both airports, though pricier than shuttles for solo travelers.
Most cave hotels can arrange a private transfer on request, which is worth considering if you're arriving late at night or with heavy luggage, since shuttle frequency drops outside peak flight hours.

By Bus from Istanbul or Other Cities
Long-distance overnight buses connect Istanbul, Ankara, and other major Turkish cities to Göreme and Nevşehir. The Istanbul route typically takes 10-12 hours, making it a budget option best suited to travelers with flexible schedules or an interest in the overnight-bus experience common in Turkey. Buses from Ankara are considerably shorter, at around 4-5 hours.
Driving to Cappadocia
Self-driving from Istanbul takes roughly 9-10 hours, while driving from Ankara takes about 3.5-4 hours. Renting a car is most useful once you're already in the region, since it makes reaching Ihlara Valley, the underground cities, and more remote viewpoints considerably easier than relying on tours or infrequent local buses.
Getting Around Once You Arrive
Within Cappadocia, Göreme functions as the most central base for reaching valley trailheads and the Göreme Open-Air Museum on foot. Local dolmuş minibuses connect Göreme, Ürgüp, Uçhisar, and Avanos frequently and cheaply, while day tours are the most common way to reach farther sights like Ihlara Valley and Derinkuyu without a rental car. See our map page for the layout of the main towns and sights relative to one another.
Planning Your Arrival
If you'd prefer to skip arranging flights and transfers separately, many Cappadocia tour packages include airport pickup as part of a multi-day itinerary. Otherwise, book your flight to Nevşehir or Kayseri, arrange a shuttle or private transfer to Göreme, and check our best time to visit guide to time your trip around the most reliable weather for balloon flights and outdoor sightseeing.
Connecting from International Flights
Most international travelers reach Cappadocia via a connection through Istanbul, either at Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), both of which offer frequent same-day domestic connections onward to Nevşehir or Kayseri. When booking, it's worth allowing at least a two-hour connection window in Istanbul to account for terminal transfers, particularly if arriving on an international flight and departing on a domestic one from a different terminal. Some travelers instead choose to spend a night in Istanbul before continuing to Cappadocia, which can also help ease jet lag before an early-morning balloon flight later in the trip.
Combining Cappadocia with Other Turkish Destinations
Because of its central location, Cappadocia pairs naturally with other stops in Turkey. Travelers often combine it with Istanbul at the start or end of a trip, or fly onward to coastal regions like Antalya, İzmir, or Bodrum for a beach extension. Domestic flight connectivity through Kayseri and Nevşehir makes multi-stop itineraries relatively easy to arrange, and many visitors find that booking all domestic legs together, alongside the international flight, secures better overall pricing than booking each leg separately closer to the travel date.
Timing Your Arrival Around a Balloon Flight
Since hot-air balloon flights depart before sunrise, it's worth arriving in Cappadocia at least the evening before your first planned flight rather than cutting it close with a same-day arrival and an immediate pre-dawn pickup. A same-day arrival followed by an early wake-up can leave little buffer if your flight is delayed, and most operators require a reasonably alert, rested guest for the early check-in and safety briefing that precedes takeoff.
