The Rafting Season at a Glance
Köprülü Canyon's main visiting season runs from April through October, tracking the period when the Köprüçay river offers reliable, manageable rafting conditions and the surrounding national park is at its most comfortable for walking, picnicking, and exploring. Within that broad window, though, spring, summer, and autumn each offer a noticeably different experience, and choosing the right month depends on whether you prioritize water conditions, weather, or lower crowds.

Spring (April–May): Highest, Coldest Water
Spring brings the highest water levels of the season, fed by snowmelt from the Taurus Mountains upstream, which translates into a livelier, colder rafting run through the gorge. Air temperatures are milder than summer, making it a comfortable time to be out and about in the national park generally, though the water itself is at its coldest, so a wetsuit top or extra layer can make the rafting run more comfortable for those sensitive to cold. Spring is also a good time to combine rafting with a visit to ancient Selge, since the climb and walk among the ruins are more pleasant before summer heat sets in.
Summer (June–August): Warmest Weather, Busiest Crowds
Summer is peak season along the whole Antalya coast, and Köprülü Canyon is no exception — expect the busiest crowds, the fullest tour schedules, and the highest air temperatures of the year. The upside is that the Köprüçay's cold water feels especially refreshing against the summer heat, and the contrast between a hot Mediterranean day and icy river water is part of what makes rafting here so popular during these months. Water levels typically ease somewhat compared to spring, generally still delivering solid grade II–III conditions on the classic run, but book rafting trips a few days ahead in July and August, since operators run at full capacity and popular time slots can fill up.

Autumn (September–October): A Favorite Shoulder Season
Many repeat visitors consider September and October the sweet spot for Köprülü Canyon — the Mediterranean summer heat has eased slightly, crowds thin out compared to July and August, and rafting operations remain in full swing through the end of the season. Water levels are generally lower and warmer than spring but still sufficient for the classic run, and the surrounding forest and canyon scenery remain lush. This period also suits a combined day that includes both rafting and a trip up to ancient Selge, since cooler temperatures make the climb and the exposed walk among the ruins noticeably more comfortable than in peak summer.
Winter (November–March): Limited or No Operations
Outside the April–October window, rafting operations at Köprülü Canyon generally pause or scale back substantially, and many tour operators reduce or suspend their schedules for the colder months. Winter also brings a higher chance of rain and colder mountain temperatures, particularly affecting the higher plateau around Selge. If you're planning a visit outside the main season, confirm current operating status directly with rafting operators and the national park before finalizing plans, since availability can vary from year to year.
Weekday vs. Weekend Timing
Because Köprülü Canyon draws heavily from Antalya's resort coast, weekends and public holidays — especially during the Turkish domestic travel season in summer — tend to bring larger crowds and fuller parking areas than weekdays. If your schedule is flexible, a weekday rafting trip, particularly earlier in the morning, generally means quieter riverbanks, less crowded picnic areas, and a more relaxed pace on and off the water.
Time of Day for Rafting and the Bridge
Morning departures are the norm for rafting day trips, both to make the most of the full day and because temperatures are more comfortable before the midday sun peaks over the gorge. If you're visiting the Roman Oluk Bridge or riverside areas independently rather than rafting, earlier or later in the day tends to offer softer light for photography and fewer other visitors around the bridge itself.
Choosing Your Month by Priority
If your priority is the liveliest, coldest water, aim for April or May. If you want the warmest overall weather and don't mind crowds or higher prices, July or August delivers that, alongside the biggest contrast between hot air and cold river. If you'd rather balance good conditions with fewer people and slightly lower costs, September or October is generally the best compromise. Whichever month you choose, see our rafting guide for how conditions affect the actual run, and our tours guide to check current seasonal availability and pricing with operators before booking.
Seasonal Timing for Ancient Selge and the Oluk Bridge
Because the plateau above the gorge sits higher and more exposed than the rafting section itself, the season you choose affects a visit to ancient Selge somewhat differently than it affects rafting. In peak summer, the exposed walk among the ruins can be genuinely hot by midday, with little shade across most of the site, so an early morning visit is strongly preferable if you're combining Selge with your trip in July or August. Spring and autumn are far more comfortable for the climb and the walk, which is part of why many travelers who want both rafting and the ancient city choose to visit in May or late September. The Oluk Bridge, being lower in the gorge and closer to the water, stays comfortable to visit across the whole April–October season, since the surrounding forest offers more shade than the open plateau at Selge.
How Weather Patterns Affect Planning
The Mediterranean climate around Köprülü Canyon means dry, predictable conditions dominate from late spring through early autumn, which is exactly why the rafting season aligns so closely with this window. Rain becomes more likely from November onward and persists through the winter months, occasionally affecting road conditions on the mountain route up toward Selge and reducing visibility and comfort for outdoor activities generally. Even within the main season, brief afternoon showers are possible in April and, less commonly, in October, so it's worth checking a short-range forecast the day before a planned rafting trip or Selge excursion, particularly at the edges of the season.
Booking Lead Time by Season
How far ahead you need to book a rafting tour also shifts with the season. During July and August, popular morning departure slots can fill several days in advance, especially for smaller private groups, so booking at least a few days ahead is sensible. In the shoulder months of April, May, September, and October, availability is generally more relaxed, and booking a day or two ahead is often sufficient. Outside the main season, it's less about lead time and more about confirming whether operators are running trips at all, since many scale back or pause entirely once water and weather conditions turn unfavorable.
